...there's this scene in Punch-Drunk Love, after Adam Sandler's character flies to Hawaii to meet Emily Watson's character, not too long after they meet (which is the picture on the cover/poster to the film actually), when they're on a beach in the evening.

It's just a short one but the music, the lighting, for some reason it translates really well for me. Before I went to Mexico back in June I had no real basis for comparison to that kind of humidity, how it could feel, but I imagined it.

Now, having been to Mexico and having experienced warmth like that, that scene speaks to me even more. Bottom line is I wanna be somewhere warm, haha. That scene just came to mind and reminds me of that desire, which is weird because I don't normally mind the cold. I'm chalking it up to being burned out at work and just needing a rest, I think, but yeah.

Random!
Been a busy time here as of late, lots on the go. We had a vacation in Mexico last month, actually we left a month ago today, how did that happen? Wow. But yes, it was only for a week but it was a fantastic week. I keep meaning to write up a review on TripAdvisor but haven't, maybe that'd be too final or something, I don't know. I really should though, before I forget too much.

But yes, that was awesome, and then I came back and ended up getting sick for a few days. That ate up most of my first week back to work, along with a holiday, and then last week I was off to Halifax for a work conference. So it's been a lot of coming and going for me, more vacation/quasi-work than work until tomorrow. And then I have three weeks currently earmarked for more annual leave in August, though I don't know if I'll use all of that or just two and change, we'll see.

I've been trying to write more too, mostly little 100 word drabbles here and there but other stuff too. I'm hoping that'll stick as there's a lot I want to try but I haven't been able to do anything in months until lately. We'll see how that goes too I suppose, been reading more too which usually helps feed into the writing, so that's good. Mexico helped with that as I did get a fair bit of reading done, not as much as I'd hoped but way more than I do here at home.

And on that note, off to read a bit before sleep. :)

Things have been very busy as of late, but it's been going well. I've officially got one month punched at the new job (as does [livejournal.com profile] believeitup with hers) and last week consisted of four days of training, from Monday to Thursday. They actually had me booked for two weeks of training, which was just ridiculous, and they shortened it to only one, which in turn became four days. Two weeks might've been appropriate for someone just starting out, perhaps the second week would be shadowing a senior solicitor around to all the different courts and whatnot, but I didn't need it. Neither did the other two trainees with me, one who had 12 years at the bar (I'm just shy of 9), albeit mainly in NS, and the other who used to work with Legal Aid before, as well as the Crown, and who was also a judge, haha. It was great information though, for the most part, and it was really nice to put faces to a lot of names. I learned how to input my hours into the computing platform we use, and consequently have to backtrack and figure out just exactly what I did in order to post it, heh, but it's good to know going forward it'll be easier.

I've also replaced my desktop, which broke a few weeks ago or so now. At first I was looking at online sites to custom build my new rig, but I was unable to build one for less than $1,500.00, and that was before delivery, haha. So instead I checked out the local stores and got a nice little mid-level machine that was on sale for only $549.00, a huge difference, and it'll be more than capable for what I want to do - surfing, writing, playing the odd MMO or game. My old machine, which was 5+ years old I think, could do all of that, on lower settings for some games, but the point is this is still a huge upgrade and I'm happy with it. The one MMO I've been playing lately, Marvel Heroes, ran fairly slowly on the old one with all low settings but this machine can handle the highest settings with no problem, which is awesome. And with the money I "saved" I picked up a new Xbox 360 for $100.00 off at Best Buy, since my old one is completely dead, so that's something too. Just need to get a special hard drive transferring device to move my old data onto the new one, since I can't do so via USB with the old one being completely dead now, d'oh.

There's not much else to report at this time. I'm hoping to have a good chat with my boss about a Christmas / early January break, as I still want to go to England with my buddy around that time. Before I go booking any tickets though I need to be sure I can go. I know I have more than enough vacation time, I just need to make sure he's going to be around, since I won't be. It shouldn't be a problem but I think I saw his calendar mention something about holidays around that time. Here's hoping he just meant holidays in general, for Christmas / New Year's, and not that he'll be going anywhere himself.

Writing is going well, but I've been pretty slow with it for the most part. Which is ok, since I haven't had a looming deadline for awhile now, but there's some new challenges I'll be signing up for that'll fix that, as well as Yuletide time coming up very soon. Having a desktop should help with that too, I'm hoping, so we'll see how that goes. :)
It feels like a Monday since we had yesterday off, and in fact I'll have three Mondays off in a row, counting yesterday. Yesterday was a holiday for Discovery Day, this coming Monday will be our holiday for Canada Day (since the 1st falls on a Sunday this year), and the one after that will be for Orangemen's Day. No doubt about it, this is the best stretch of holidays every year, though sometimes they're spread out instead of back-to-back-to-back depending on the dates, not this year however.

The weekend seemed to fly by, I'm guessing mainly because Saturday we spend pretty much the whole day in the city and then drove out that night. We went to a reception for some friends of ours who got married in Cuba back in April, which was a good time. Sunday and Monday were pretty lazy for me, though I did get in a few walks and tidied up a little bit in between. I meant to do more but I was pretty damn lazy, and I guess I did read a fair bit too, so it wasn't a complete waste of time.

Tonight we're city bound again, to see a concert at the Arts & Culture Centre: this one to be precise. Should be fun, though we'll have to drive out after it's done since I've got work again in the morning. Looking forward to it though, and then Thursday I have to get some dental surgery to have a few teeth removed, leaving me clinically impaired for 24 hours or so they say. I had to move some court in the city on Friday as a result, since it probably wouldn't be good to drive into the city and appear in front of a court while clinically impaired.

So, I'm back in Carbonear. After landing in St. John's around 2:30 am on Saturday morning, I crashed at my sister's place (mercifully less than 5 minutes away from the airport) and then got a ride back out Saturday afternoon. My luggage is still not here, sadly; it's apparently in the hands of the courier now, who isn't operating today I guess, so no bag for me until tomorrow. My work shoes and my razor and things are all in it too, and I've got court in the morning, but I'm looking at this as a prodding from fate to bust out my fancy dress shoes I got in Philly, oh, two years ago or more and haven't worn yet. Also, I can borrow my father's razor this one time, so it'll be ok.

I've unpacked my carry on, which was pretty jam packed with various gifts and electronics, so that's something I guess. It contained one of the things I bought for myself, which was seasons 1-4 of The Venture Bros. show, and I'm psyched to check it out. It also has some of the lovely Britcoms that my awesome sister-in-law [livejournal.com profile] suchanadorer and her hubby [livejournal.com profile] elevea got me, and the great books my darling wife [livejournal.com profile] believeitup and the awesome [livejournal.com profile] onlyonechoice gave me as well, so I'm not completely bereft of awesome things while waiting for my checked baggage. :)

Speaking of awesome things, I came home to a whole mess of Christmas cards from people, omg. Such beautiful words and art, you guys, you are all amazing. ♥ Big thanks to [livejournal.com profile] stratford_girl, [livejournal.com profile] shinyandnat, [livejournal.com profile] _bounce_, [livejournal.com profile] writteninsable, and [livejournal.com profile] jiandan for all the amazing cards omg. :D

In a similar vein, I also received some awesome goodies in my fandom stocking, including some pretty graphics from [livejournal.com profile] chokolattejedi, [livejournal.com profile] noveltea, [livejournal.com profile] twinsarein, [livejournal.com profile] ariestess, and [livejournal.com profile] stormylullabye (the latter is a pretty wallpaper that I think you'd really like, [livejournal.com profile] believeitup!), and some awesome drabbles by [livejournal.com profile] evil_little_dog of The Dresden Files and [livejournal.com profile] rise_your_dead of HIMYM. Thank you so much all! :D

The trip was pretty amazing, and if not the longest one I've had with my wife then definitely a very, very close second I'd wager. Even when we got married I was only there for about two weeks, and this was just shy of three, so I think it comes in first place. :) I didn't blog much from there, nor did I take too many pictures, because most of the time was spent relaxing and just hanging out, which was very nice. And, on top of that, we've now got a good grasp on the pending move, including dates and paperwork back from the government, so that's pretty awesome too. I need to check into a whole bunch of things in the near future to start furthering those plans but the wheels are more in motion now than they've ever been before.

Other than that, I'm not really looking forward to work tomorrow, but. I do have the desire, the motivation, to go into this year giving it my all and to do the best I can with it. This month is going to be very busy, with a lot of court, starting tomorrow, so I'm going to be hitting the ground running. I'm very much looking forward to getting it all done and, not to sound like money is all that matters, to getting it all billed out and making an awesome month out of it. December was very good, and I want to keep that momentum up, as January is usually god awful for billings. Not this one, though, I'm going to kick its ass.

That and many other things are on my mind, and we'll see how far I get with them. I won't go into detail here, both because I'm still wrestling with a few things in my own mind and am not sure how to spell them out, and also out of fear for jinxing them, but suffice it to say I want to make a lot of changes this year. No time to start than the present after all, right?
Tomorrow is my flight back to NL, at 3:45pm, though I'll likely be back before that since I need to bring my wife to work, return the rental, check in, etc. And tomorrow morning we have to hit up the post office up the street to get some things done too, maybe some packing depending on what I get done tonight I suppose.

It's been a great trip, I meant to post more about it while it was happening but I kinda failed on that front. More of a living in the moment kind of trip, I suppose, but I'll try to write more about it when I get back home. It was great, though, and had a blast, and as always really don't want to go tomorrow but c'est la vie.

Anyway, on that note, I should go and start to pack things, it's going for 9:30 already and even though I mercifully have a decent departure this time 'round I still need to get ready for it and all. Hope everyone's had a nice holiday and a good week, and that you all have a good weekend too. :)
Hope everyone is having an amazing holiday! I know I've been scarce lately, to put it lightly, but I'm just focusing on enjoying my time with [livejournal.com profile] believeitup and [livejournal.com profile] onlyonechoice and relaxing, so that's what I've been up to since last Sunday. I've been here for a week today and am here until January 6th, and it's been great. Maybe I'll do another post later about what we've been up to but it's mainly been an easy going kind of visit and it's been nice. :)

So, yes, short crappy entry is short and crappy but I'll try to write something more detailed this week some time. In the meantime, happy holidays to everyone and take care! :D

I has a new ticker. This makes me happy. That is all.
I'm finally back home from Halifax. 'Twas a good trip, a lot of fun was had, and it was a pretty active one; we walked all over that city, holy crap. Yesterday we walked a good 11-12 km at least, and walked easily half of that or more every day that we were there. We were up and out the door by 9-10am every day and back by the late afternoon / after supper, which lead to relaxing in the pool/jacuzzi/dry sauna in the hotel. That was my favourite part of the day. :D I need to weigh myself tomorrow because I think with the mostly healthy eating I did (for me anyway >.>) and all the walking and swimming, I hopefully lost weight while I was away. We'll see anyway, even if not I got a lot more activity than I usually do so hopefully that'll give me the momentum I need to get walking and exercising more back here.

We got there late last Thursday and mainly took it easy, walking downtown and having a late supper in the nice summer weather. Friday we did a lot of sightseeing, including the Citadel (fyi, we stayed at a hotel almost next door to that called the Halifax Citadel), and did a lot more walking around the area. Saturday we made an indoor day out of it, as it was raining out, and took the bus to the Mic Mac Mall which was alright, and we spent the day there browsing and such. Sunday the weather was better and we did a ton of walking once again, this time exploring a different part of Halifax. I also picked up some merchandise for my lovely wife from the Smiling Goat Cafe, a neat little organic espresso bar. Then yesterday we walked all over Halifax trying to find a Harvey's restaurant, which we finally did but only after being sent to one by one of the hotel staff that was unknowingly recently torn down, d'oh. And today we flew home, back to much cooler temperatures. I got to meet up with my sister when I got back and gave her a ride home from school, stopping first to catch a movie - Crazy, Stupid Love which I loved, omg, such a great movie. Then I drove back home, getting back well before dark.

We got to meet up with one of my friends from law school and her husband last night, which was awesome, I hadn't seen them since... well, gee, since graduating in 2003, almost 10 years ago, wow. They're great, and we shared a beer on a patio in downtown Halifax in the sunshine, very awesome. The only downer to the warm weather was me and my ignorance re: tanning; I've got wicked red arms and very red legs, ugh, though liberal application of medicated aloe vera has been helping a lot.

Bad news coming home though, sadly; a cousin of mine (my mom's cousin, technically, making me ... a second cousin? Third cousin? Mom's father and the cousin's mother are siblings) was on the plane with us going back to NL from Halifax, but that was because her mother was in the hospital and had taken a turn for the worse. She ended up passing away later this afternoon, which is very surprising because she'd been doing well all week and they even thought she'd be home soon. :/ She'd been sick for awhile, sadly, and her husband passed away two years ago tomorrow, actually. At least she's not in pain any more, it'd been hard for her for awhile now.

Alright, sorry to end off on a downer, I guess, but that's the update. Off to bed for me, need to put some more aloe vera on my burns and get to sleep, tomorrow's going to be a rough day methinks. Hope everyone else is doing well and had a nice weekend. :)

long weekend

I'm back home after a nice long weekend away. You could call it camping, maybe, but we stayed in a lovely house in Summerville, owned by my friends' parents. It was actually the childhood home of her father, so it's not even a cabin, really, it's a house. A smallish one, but a house nonetheless, and they've put a lot of work and money into it to make it a very nice getaway.

There were... a ton of us there, haha, can't remember how many. Let's see, for Saturday night we had Joni, Alex, Stephanie, Jennifer, Gordon, Danielle, Suzanne, Jackie, Chris, Simon (J&C's 5 year old son, he's a sweetie omg), Kathy, and me, so yeah, that's 12. We had a bbq Saturday night, followed by drinking and playing Family Feud on the iPad (Alex's, not mine) and a game called "What's Yours Like?" which was pretty damn fun. XD Then some guitar playing and more drinking.

On Saturday we got up earlyish - I was crashing on the couch and therefore was always the last to sleep and the first to be woken up XD - and played some golf after breakfast. That was fun, Alex, Jackie, Jennifer and I had fun. Then we went back to join the others and went out for ice cream in a place up the road. It was then that Danielle and Suzanne drove back, so there were only 10 of us Sunday night. It was more of the same, a nice bbq for supper and more games - Catchphrase, which rocks - and then guitar playing, with a lot of drinking and silliness.

Today we got up around the same time, 9am-ish, and had another nice little breakfast and packed our things. We drove out together and stopped in Clarenville for lunch at McDonald's and then had some ice cream at an awesome local spot. Then it was time to gas up and hit the road, so much traffic omg, but that was to be expected coming home after May 24th weekend, heh.

It was a nice relaxing weekend, gotta say, lots of laughs and good times were had by all. :) It's only about a 2 hour drive away from here too, would love to do it more often, and J&A were incredible hosts as always. They go out a lot, but it's often with her family of course, though every now and then they can have it to themselves. I think the relatives rotate using it, kinda. It was great though, and my first time there - last time I heard of them going was 2 years ago this time of the year, though I was busy getting married at the time, hee. XD Speaking of which, this was where J&A got married, though I didn't know them well enough to warrant an invite at the time, hehe.

Hope everyone else had a good weekend, and that you have a nice rest of the week too. :)

Heading "home," depending on your definition of the word, or at least back to Canada. Not long enough of a visit, but then again it never is. Had an amazing time as always, though, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] believeitup and [livejournal.com profile] onlyonechoice.

Will post more later, for now I need to finish off my breakfast and get to the airport. My heart's too heavy to say much more than that at the moment.
It's been awhile, I know, but I've been busy! First off, I've not forgotten the meme from last week, I've just not been around long enough to do it. Soon though!

Been an awesome trp so far. Flights down were miraculously all on time and smooth, and no luggage snafu this time, phew. Got to [livejournal.com profile] believeitup's apartment just before midnight, maybe a quarter of, which may not sound like it's a big deal at first blush, but I flew down on Saturday, April 23rd, aka my birthday, and for the first time ever I got to hear Happy Birthday in person from my wife. <3 Which, again probably a small detail for some, but it meant the world to me and was the best birthday present ever. It's the little things. :)

Sunday we were up early to drive to Lahaska to meet [livejournal.com profile] onlyonechoice and her family for Easter Brunch at Peddler's Village, my second time joining them there, and it was just as awesome and delicious as last year. Took a bunch of pics... on my BlackBerry, after yours truly left his camera at the apartment, having taken it out to charge the night before and everything. >.< Will upload those later, as it costs way too much to transfer data down here on an international roaming basis, but have lots of cute ones, including a new wallpaper one of me and the missus, and got a new Facebook profile picture from some of T's pics. The rest of the day saw us wandering through the Village, having a nice ride home (was so nice all day, omg, and we have a new Dodge Charger this time :D!) then home for naps and relaxing.

Monday was back to work for my baby sadly, and I got right back into the routine of bringing lunch to her, I love doing that. We had an earlyish night even though she wasn't in until lunch time Tuesday, as I had a phone appearance to make the next morning, so we hit the hay early and read for a bit, with me playing some Super Scribblenauts I got as a birthday gift from T and Sara. :D I also got both seasons of Breaking Bad from them on Blu-Ray, which is awesome, and Volume 4 of the Glee soundtracks.

Tuesday was the court appearance by phone that went exactly as I told the other lawyer how it would go, rararar. Waste of time, though worse for them - aside from nothing happening that they wanted, the judge reminded them they should be paying child support and ordered that too, heh, so there. Then Sara and I fled the hit apartment omg - it's the humidity that's making it unbearable, but fingers crossed that finally broke yesterday. We hit up a fresh market near her workplace, which had AC, as does the Charger, hehe. Then we had another low key night, cuddling up to watch the first episode of Game of Thrones and many episodes of The Republic of Doyle, which was awesome.

Wednesday was such a fantastic day, omg. It was Sara's day off and we made a day of it, heading to the King of Prussia mall for the day. Lots of both window shopping and actual purchasing, and was just nice to spend the day with my better half, especially in air conditioned cars/malls. We got in some more tv show watching that night, consuming more Republic of Doyle since I couldn't get the second episode of Game of Thrones on iTunes or anything, grr. Such a great day though, a full happy day with my wife. To cap it off, Boston beat Montreal in overtime of Game 7 to move on to the second round of the NHL playoffs! :D

Thursday it finally cooled off, and after work Sara and I got to drive around a little. We were joined by T for an amaaaaazing BBQ supper at Famous Dave's, mmmm. I just about ate it all this time, so much food omg, and so so yummeh! Then Sara and I watched the second episode of Game of Thrones after I figured out how to get my hands onto it, followed by even more Republic of Doyle. At this rate we should get to finish the first season before I go back, which I so do not want to think about. >.>

Tonight while T is gone for the evening my beautiful wife and I will be going out to supper at Outback Steakhouse, never been there so really looking forward to it. :D Then some raiding together tonight for a change, which should be fun too. :D I've had a productive day on a number of fronts, which rocks, am really enjoying it and still have supper and such to look forward to as well!

I also found reasonably priced tickets for tomorrow's Game One between Boston and Philly, which is here omg, and I'll be dropping Sara off at work and heading straight for the arena. :D It'll be well over before she gets off work so it doesn't even interfere with anything, so awesome, and omg I will get to see my first NHL playoff game, even if it's in the wrong arena. XD Will totally be going undercover so as not to get beaten up. XD

That's it for now, off to get my wife. I love her so much and am having such an amazing trip, she's so great to put up with me being (imho) clingy and such, hee. I just don't get that many hugs and such when we're apart, I guess, so I'm always holding her hand or touching her hair or her shoulder, the small of her back as we enter a room, that kind of thing. Loving this time together as always, I'm such a lucky guy. :)

Alright, speaking of which, time to stop rambling and go hop in mah Charger and get her. Hope everyone's doing well and will write again soon! :)
Just need to get through this week and then it's vacation time. Only a brief one, just over a week, but still. This week is mercifully shorter than usual, too, since Friday is Good Friday, though I won't be leaving to fly out until Saturday afternoon, getting into Philly late on Saturday night. That's a bit of a bummer, as I usually fly in the wee small hours of the morning and get there in the afternoon, but that's all you can do when that's all that's available. Likewise for flying on Saturday instead of Friday; Friday had nothing available for flying on points, and to buy a ticket would've been insanely expensive, since it's a holiday and the airlines don't let you forget that they know it is, heh.

Been listening to a lot of music lately, which is pretty cool. In the last few weeks I've been grooving to new albums by The Strokes, Jeff Martin, Elbow, Foo Fighters, Paul Simon, and TV On The Radio, not to mention dipping into some Muse that I've never checked out before but am loving - namely Absolution and Black Holes and Revelations. Will definitely be checking out more of their stuff, love it. And of the new material, all of it is great. The Paul Simon album is classic Simon, to me anyway, from his There Goes Rhymin' Simon era, The Strokes is rocking, all of it is awesome, I'm very very happy and musically satisfied. :D

I've also been reading more, finishing off two Star Wars books, Fatal Alliance and Deceived, both of which were good. I've now moved on to the George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, thanks to friends' recommendations and the new tv series, which I'm liking so far but am only a few chapters into at the moment.

Also, coming up I'll be traveling to be with my wife for a little over a week, which is totally awesome and I cannot wait omg. Really need the break, and it's been far too long since we've been together, so that should be awesome. :) I'm leaving on Saturday and will be back on late Monday night, May 2nd, so if you don't hear much from me during that time you'll know where I am. :)

What, me, counting down until I leave? Preposterous. >.>

It crossed my mind earlier today (though who am I kidding, I totally am counting down) when a client brought in papers recently served on them with a court date during the dates I'm away. Of course it'll have to be moved, since I wasn't advised ahead of time, and I've e-mailed everyone involved to do so asap, so it'll be ok, but it has me thinking about and anticipating the trip once again. Work has been so busy lately, even if the court time has tailed off as of late, so I really do need this break.

Not much else to report, really. Saw Sucker Punch over the weekend and even though I know it was a bad movie I still enjoyed parts of it. Hoping to see Paul tomorrow night with friends as I'll be in the city for work the next morning. Also want to get back into writing some more, thanks in no small part to rereading some of my older projects, but still haven't done so.

Oh, and started reading yet another series of books, as if I didn't need to start yet another book, based on the Star Wars universe and in line with their upcoming MMO set in the Old Republic. I'm really liking the one I'm reading now though, which is good, so that's something I guess.

Hope everyone had a good weekend. :)

Hope everyone had a good weekend. :)
Waiting at the airport in Philly for our plane to arrive from Norfolk. We were supposed to have boarded an hour ago so running pretty late, but thankfully (now anyway) I had a 5+ hour layover in Toronto so I thankfully am not in a hurry, unlke a little over two weeks ago. *grumbles about missed connections to Cleveland* They just announced that we're a full flight and that there's people waiting on standby too, thankfully I have an assigned seat so I should be ok. It's 5A too, wonder if that'll be first class on this ickle jet? HmmMMmm.

Had an amazing time, as always. Love my time with [livejournal.com profile] believeitup and [livejournal.com profile] onlyonechoice (feat. [livejournal.com profile] samzimmerman & some crazy cats). I missed my little buddy Simon and was glad to get to know Ms. Kensi Kensington the Third, Esquire (aka Kensi, which is her real name, I am just ridiculous sometimes), who I think warmed up to mesa the trip went on. I owe everyone a great big write up, which maybe I'll do in Toronto, depending on when I get there I suppose. Suffice it to say it was a blast and I miss my wife and everyone dearly already, and can't wait for my next visit.

Not much else to say at the moment. I am in full on travel mode and focusing on that rather than missing my wife, and enjoying the seat I finally found - I was seated on the cold hard floor there for a bit - and may read a bit more. Sort of inspired to write a bit, I meant to during the days / evenings Sara worked this week but never did. Instead I just slept / watched tv / spent incredible amounts of money, take your pick. Some days all three. XD

Alright, reading it is then, I think. Got so many books on this trip, and may have just enough time to finish the Coffee with Hemingway book this darling girl got me for Chrismas before our flight boards. Hope everyone else is having a nice weekend! :)

canadiandiamond: (Awkward hug! [Christmas])
So, I am a horrible LJer and haven't posted anything since early this month. It's been extremely busy, lots of court and lots of work to be done, as December usually is, but I survived it (or have so far anyway XD). Tomorrow I have work in the morning, a trial in the afternoon, then it's off to the city to stay there overnight in order to better catch my 5:05am flight to [livejournal.com profile] believeitup on Thursday morning. :D I cannot even put into words how much I'm looking forward to the trip or how much I need the break, but it's almost here. :)

I should still have computer access when I'm away and will try to post while there at least once, but until then, and in case I don't get a chance in the near future, hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas! :D
