David sat at his desk, staring down at his textbook. He had been studying for over three hours now since supper time, with no break. It was one of those nights where nothing would stick in his mind unless he read it over a dozen times or more. Nothing frustrated him more, especially after having spent an hour in class earlier that day with the knowledge coming to him so easily.
He stood up and stretched his legs, walking around the room a few times before sitting back down again. The clock read 8:47pm. Josh was out somewhere, probably with Laurie, he didn’t remember. His roommate had probably told him before he’d left, but David had been re-reading a passage over again and hadn’t paid attention, waving dismissively at his friend.
Why couldn’t he simply retain all of the knowledge he gleaned from others? That idea haunted at him, he’d had it several times before and each time it crept into his mind his thoughts lingered upon it more and more. If only there was a way that he could modify his powers, to make it so. He was secretly hoping for a guest lecturer, or a field trip to somewhere that would bring him closer to someone, anyone that might have an inkling on how he could go about accomplishing his dream. If he was close enough, he could pick up on the idea and approach them about it. They could formulate a plan, work out a way to...
But no, he was lost in his reverie again. David sighed and looked at the clock again. Fifteen minutes had passed since the last time he’d done so, and he was still on the same page, the same paragraph as then. That was it, he wasn’t getting anywhere with this tonight. He shut his book and stood to his feet again. Maybe he could visit Vanny, she always made things better. Anything would be better for him than struggling with his studies again. He opened the door and headed for the girls’ dorm, hoping that his girlfriend was free to help cheer him up.
