back to reality

I'm finally back home from Halifax. 'Twas a good trip, a lot of fun was had, and it was a pretty active one; we walked all over that city, holy crap. Yesterday we walked a good 11-12 km at least, and walked easily half of that or more every day that we were there. We were up and out the door by 9-10am every day and back by the late afternoon / after supper, which lead to relaxing in the pool/jacuzzi/dry sauna in the hotel. That was my favourite part of the day. :D I need to weigh myself tomorrow because I think with the mostly healthy eating I did (for me anyway >.>) and all the walking and swimming, I hopefully lost weight while I was away. We'll see anyway, even if not I got a lot more activity than I usually do so hopefully that'll give me the momentum I need to get walking and exercising more back here.

We got there late last Thursday and mainly took it easy, walking downtown and having a late supper in the nice summer weather. Friday we did a lot of sightseeing, including the Citadel (fyi, we stayed at a hotel almost next door to that called the Halifax Citadel), and did a lot more walking around the area. Saturday we made an indoor day out of it, as it was raining out, and took the bus to the Mic Mac Mall which was alright, and we spent the day there browsing and such. Sunday the weather was better and we did a ton of walking once again, this time exploring a different part of Halifax. I also picked up some merchandise for my lovely wife from the Smiling Goat Cafe, a neat little organic espresso bar. Then yesterday we walked all over Halifax trying to find a Harvey's restaurant, which we finally did but only after being sent to one by one of the hotel staff that was unknowingly recently torn down, d'oh. And today we flew home, back to much cooler temperatures. I got to meet up with my sister when I got back and gave her a ride home from school, stopping first to catch a movie - Crazy, Stupid Love which I loved, omg, such a great movie. Then I drove back home, getting back well before dark.

We got to meet up with one of my friends from law school and her husband last night, which was awesome, I hadn't seen them since... well, gee, since graduating in 2003, almost 10 years ago, wow. They're great, and we shared a beer on a patio in downtown Halifax in the sunshine, very awesome. The only downer to the warm weather was me and my ignorance re: tanning; I've got wicked red arms and very red legs, ugh, though liberal application of medicated aloe vera has been helping a lot.

Bad news coming home though, sadly; a cousin of mine (my mom's cousin, technically, making me ... a second cousin? Third cousin? Mom's father and the cousin's mother are siblings) was on the plane with us going back to NL from Halifax, but that was because her mother was in the hospital and had taken a turn for the worse. She ended up passing away later this afternoon, which is very surprising because she'd been doing well all week and they even thought she'd be home soon. :/ She'd been sick for awhile, sadly, and her husband passed away two years ago tomorrow, actually. At least she's not in pain any more, it'd been hard for her for awhile now.

Alright, sorry to end off on a downer, I guess, but that's the update. Off to bed for me, need to put some more aloe vera on my burns and get to sleep, tomorrow's going to be a rough day methinks. Hope everyone else is doing well and had a nice weekend. :)

off a wii bit

So, I was keeping up with my Wii Fit exercise routine right up to my trip to see Sara. I even brought the Wii Fit Plus disc with me to the US to use, even if only for the first week I was there while she still had to work - heck, I even brought my sweat pants with me - but I didn't use it. Then I had two weeks of omg indulgence in all the American food and drink I could get my hands on, and to boot since I've been home (two weeks to the day) I've still been on vacation, exercise- and diet-wise (or lack thereof), and bang, my weight has gone up to slightly more than it was pre-Wii.

To try and get back on the wagon (I fell off a Wii bit, HAH) I'm going to get back on the Wii after work today, and I signed up for Weight Watchers Online to keep track of my points and whatnot, after seeing how wonderfully it's working for my wife and her roomie.

So we'll see how that works out, I guess, here's hoping I'll be able to get back into the routine I had before, with the added benefit of tracking my calorie intake now. :)

iiiinteresting

I discovered tonight that while riding my Wii!bike in one of the Wii Fit games, your Wii!pet that you've entered can chase you along. In this case, Simon chases me around, which often results in me jerking the wheel to avoid running him over, and Wii!me falling off of bridges and cliffs. Very fitting, somehow.

At least my Wii!wife was on the course and directed me the last flag I had trouble finding, that was nice too. :)

back on the wagon!

Ugh, I had a bad weekend in terms of my recent dieting attempts and working out. Meaning no working out at all (aside from a little walking, but not all that much) and eating a lot of bad stuff. Friday wasn't bad; I didn't work out but I didn't eat a lot of junk, either, but on Saturday I stayed up late gaming and snacking a little (not as much as I used to when I did no exercise, but still), and Sunday I went to the city where I had take out for supper, popcorn with the movie, a chicken burger later that night, annnnnnd before leaving the city yesterday I had lunch at the Big R. >.>

Backing up a little, the movie was good! Myself and five girls went to see When In Rome during Superbowl Sunday, oops. What, me, not a football fan? It was decent enough, I guess; pretty formulaic but a great cast, including a bunch of people I didn't expect to see in it. Good company, too, though I only sat next to Joni whom I'd caught up with the week before, but still, it was nice. We may have to do it again, though probably to a more universally appealing movie that the guys will want to go see too, heh.

I am back on the wagon today, though! No snacks left (I did finish them off yesterday, shh), and actually I technically got back on the wagon last night by getting back on the exercise bike a little. My sweatpants were in the wash, though, so I couldn't go as hard as I'd like, but I did put in ~15m or so while watching Couples Retreat on DVD. Yes, more Kristen Bell, shh. XD Today, though, I was back on the Wii, seeing as my two week goal deadline was today (I failed, but not by a lot), so I set a new one and went at it for a good 45m. Good times! The 10m constant hula hooping is intense for one so wide around the waist as me, omg, but it was a good workout. :)

All I have to do is keep that up and continue not to binge like I did this weekend (nothing else on the horizon for 2-3 weeks so I should be ok, I hope!), since I know I will in 5-6 weeks from now when I'm back Stateside, and I should be good. I'm pretty happy with the new lifestyle, so far, no snacking every night any more (the past weekend the exception) and getting some activity in my routine. Even if it's not very much, it's a start, yes? Yes. :)

Hope everybody had a good weekend!

Wii fit!

So, I'm on Day 4 of trying to be good and exercising. There's a road block up ahead, however; Blue Rodeo concert on Saturday means a trip to the city (and picking up the Blu Ray player I bought online at Futureshop, woo!) and likely a movie, which means popcorn. And probably having supper in there, where I'll try to be good. And a brunch on Sunday, which, well, that shouldn't be too, too bad, but we'll see.

But yes! I've been using the Wii Fit Plus for four days straight and it's been going well. Today I found a bunch of new mini games I didn't know existed, omg, so awesome. AND I found out you can enter your pet on the system. XDDDDDD I added Simon, picking a good colour and match for him, but then they wanted me to weigh him, with me picking him up. Which, uh, oops. So I scooped up some pillows and he's horribly underweighed, but my cat is in Wii Fit with me and that gives me great lulz. XD

Back to my spinach salad supper, mmm. Here's hoping I can stick with this whole thing. :)

long weekend!

It's been a relaxing, much-needed long weekend so far, which has been great. [livejournal.com profile] believeitup had the weekend off too and I got to spend a buuuuuuuuunch of time with her in LOTRO, getting a lot done on our newly-minted characters. I also got to spend a lot of time talking to one of my best friends over Vent too, which, both combined, resulted in staying up waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too late on Friday and Saturday night, oops. But it was ok, since I didn't have anywhere to be or anything to do.

Yesterday my sister came home for Thanksgiving (more on that later!) and we had a lovely family supper, and then we went to Wal-Mart where I picked up Wii Fit Plus and we all played with that for a bit, which was also nice. Supposed to head downstairs in a few to play again, before she goes back in a few hours' time. That's been nice too, I miss hanging out with my sister. Other than that I have no plans for today, aside from getting to hang out with my wife later on tonight. :)

I hope everyone had a Happy Canadian Thanksgiving, even if you're not Canadian. XD I'm thankful for having a bunch of friends on here for so long, and for being able to rant and share with y'all and in return to get to enjoy the same with you, even if I don't post as much as I should these days.

And on that note, off to get fit, or to at least have fun in the attempt of the same! :D

state of the union

Thankfully the week is half over already, due in no small part to having Monday off as a holiday. I've got no appointments for tomorrow but some things popped up today that will definitely keep me busy tomorrow. Friday isn't bad either, but next week will be super busy for sure, so I better enjoy the slightly slower pace while I can.

Last night I headed into the city since I had court in St. John's early-ish this morning. Not too, too early - it was set for 10:15am - but if I had to get up and drive into the city this morning I'd be facing more traffic (and potentially moose), plus a much earlier rise, so I went in last night. Also, I hadn't seen the friends I stay with in awhile, so it was nice to hang out with them for awhile. Alex and I grabbed a loooooot of wings for supper (yay for wing night!), then hit the mall for a bit with the intention of seeing a movie but we didn't after all. We toyed with the idea of seeing Transformers 2 but it wasn't in digital and would've been blurry and, well, I've heard it's horrible anyway, so oh well. I did pick up the complete series of The State on DVD though, which I'm watching now. It's pretty darn funny, kinds seems like an American Kids In The Hall, a little. After I went back to J&A's I got to hang out with them some more, then I enjoyed a nice, long phone call with the wife before reading for an hour or so and sleeping.

Today I got to sleep in later than usual, and court went well. After that I grabbed brunch at a favourite local spot, then popped into a downtown music store and picked up a cd for the ride home (the greatest hits of Warren Zevon, which is great!), and then headed back to the office. I got back around 1:00pm, and had someone waiting outside for me to talk to me before I even got into the office. Ugh. The rest of the afternoon was just as busy, though I did get things done.

Part of today got me thinking, though. The court has relaxed its dress code for the summer, thankfully, so no need to wear the formal suits to Supreme Court until this fall. This means you can wear regular suits or lighter clothes, and I wore one of my grey suits that I used to wear a lot until recently. I got a few new ones before the wedding that I've been using, and have had a lot of Supreme Court appearances so until they relaxed the code I was wearing that suit a lot too. Anyway, wearing the good ol' grey one I always used to wear... let's just say I used to have to wear a belt with it and now, not so much. In fact, while doing them back up this afternoon one of the buttons actually came off of it. -.-;; Now, I know I've been horrible lately with the bad eating and all, but I hadn't really noticed the results of that until now. So after getting home from work today, it being such a lovely afternoon, I put the Warren Zevon album on my iTunes and then my iPod and went for a walk for ~30-40m or so. Not a marathon or anything, but I want to make some kinda effort to get in shape, or at least lose a little weight. I weighed myself before leaving and I think the last time I checked I was ~245ish, maybe? But now that's 256, which, while being a cool number and a power of 2 (2^8!), is more than I'd like to weigh. No idea what my goal should be, or what timelines I should follow, but yeah. Thinking I'd like to lose maybe 5-10 lbs. before my trip to see Sara in September, which, if you'll note my TickerFactory counter in my userinfo, is in 1 month, 2 weeks, and 6 days from now. Not sure if that's feasible, but it's good to have a goal period, and to work towards it, right? Not sure how far I'll get but saying this out loud and in my journal might actually coax me into keeping up with it. We'll see how far that goes anyway!

That being said, it's time to get back to looking at my resume and this one particular website a friend linked me to earlier. Yay for exploring other options!

I think I've been inspired by the amazing [livejournal.com profile] tanya_ltp to try and excerise more and eat better. We'll see how long that lasts. XD

Work wasn't as bad as I feared, especially since this one bad thing I was sure was going to happen didn't. In fact, it turned out to be quite the opposite, so phew. Still have waaaaaaaaay too much to do and I have to get top of it, but it's no worse than when I left anyway.

Made a new icon, as shown in this post. Braintree! Good times, [livejournal.com profile] everyoung, good times.

[eta] How did I not know that J. August Richards (Angel's Gunn) was in eps of Conviction, and as a lawyer no less? How cool is that? :D

[eta2] My ears still aren't back to normal, 2 days later. Grrr. It was weird explaining a mortgage to people this afternoon, it sounded to me like I was talking underwater. I hope I wasn't actually yelling and didn't know it or something. -.-;;

so tired

Well, I've managed to use the ol' exercise bike every day this week so far, from Sunday on. Pretty tired now, I should get to bed as I have to get up a little earlier than usual for court. It's nothing big, but still, I'm not looking forward to it for some reason. I hope it goes well. I know it's going to be a busy morning, and I get to go last overall with the seniority and all, or lack thereof on my part. Eh, oh well, hopefully it'll make the day go by faster, and then bang!, the week's over half way done.

I watched Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead last night for the first time since my sister got me the DVD for my birthday. Such a fun movie, it's great. Makes me want to read Hamlet again, since I only did way back in high school... ok, maybe just a summary of it or something.

At any rate, it's off to bed and reading for a bit I think. The Daily Show is a rerun again, but I watched the first half just for the bad, bad joke they do about Bush. I mean bad. Yikes. But yes, sleep now. :)

another weekend is over

It wasn't too bad, actually it was pretty good. The highlight, of course, was seeing Blue Rodeo in concert on Friday night, one of my favourite bands. After that, I got to hang out with a couple of friends pretty much all day yesterday, something I haven't done in weeks really. I hardly get to see anyone I know these days it seems, outside of family, so that was nice. Just bummed around the mall a bit, saw Kingdom of Heaven and then that night I watched Life Aquatic with my sister and her boyfriend, after I bought it. Wes Anderson is awesome. :D

I'm really tired tonight, probably because I did some exercise for a change once I got home. Much needed too, after eating not-so-well this weekend, compared to all last week. Hopefully I'll keep it up and we'll see what happens. Right now I'm going to hit the hay a little earlier than usual and read for a bit before going to sleep. Hopefully this week goes well, and next weekend is a long weekend. Right now, it looks like I'll be staying put, for the simple fact that I've spent way too much money on gas and time driving the last month or so. It's been a fun series of weekends though, it'll be kinda lonely next weekend I think. Ah well, that's what phones and IMs are for, right? ^_^

another weekend is over

I built something!

An exercise bike, to be precise. While sitting at work after supper I figured I should exercise more, and it was pecking out, so the idea came to me that I should have a bike or a treadmill to use at said times. Plus my sister started using one recently and has lost a bit of weight on it, so that tipped the scales in its favour. It took me about 2 hours to build it, with the included allan key and little wrench. Woohoo! Now to use it, though it's far too late tonight. Hopefully tomorrow I'll get the chance.

Today at work was pretty crazy, and I reckon the rest of the week will be just as bad. I hope I can sneak out early on Friday so that I can go to the concert in the city on time. We'll see I guess, it'll be ok.

Well, off to bed with me, I need to start getting more sleep I think. Plus the Daily Show is on and I can watch that while I'm in bed. Good times. :D
