new ways to fall apart

I haven't been updating this as much as I should, but will try to cover everything that's been going on lately, with convenient LJ cuts and everything. :)

As I wrote earlier, I didn't get the job I'd applied for way back in November last year. It got dragged out way too long, then got tangled up in the Province's budgetary woes, first being cut out altogether and then being re-opened, and in the end it seems like they hired a very junior person to cut back on expenses. That's what I'd suspected anyway, or that someone had gotten bumped from another place to fill this one, and it's what I've heard other people say. Last week I found out who has the job, someone who hasn't even been at the Bar a full year yet, so it looks like the finances probably played a part in it all. Which, well. I'm sure the new lawyer will do their best and I don't want to sound bitter or anything but I am, hah. Not at them, but at the government, for causing this whole financial mess and everything. Blargh.

We'll see what happens I suppose. We had an excellent first quarter and are doing well this one too so I want to keep that up, and on other people's advice I've resubmitted my resume to the same crowd (and to the Crown as well, just in case) so we'll see. Kinda hard to get my hopes up after nearly everyone telling me I was perfect for the job - my own boss even, the lawyer I would've worked with, the entire court staff - only to realize that, no, I'm not good enough for it, but lingering too long on those kinds of thoughts isn't good, right? Right. So, onward and upward, get over it and move on, etc., but seeing who they hired kinda drove that home again I suppose. Trying hard not to be too negative but it's pretty difficult, not gonna lie.

I haven't done all that much lately, but things I did write awhile back for [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen are now revealed, which is nice. :) Like many other people I suspect the reveals and receiving comments / kudos is often just as much / more fun than the writing itself, so seeing some of that come in has been nice. The first few days were the busiest but getting the odd e-mail notification every now and then puts a smile on my face. I need to remember to keep at it if I want to get more of the same, of course, but for now I haven't really had that much in the way of inspiration to write. I think more will come after hockey's over, which may be tonight for me, heh, and leads to another cut!

My Bruins are choking it up right about now, good lord. They got up 3-1 on the Leafs but let up on them and have since lost the last 2, forcing a do-or-die Game 7 tonight. They're exhausted, I think, both physically and likely emotionally too after everything that's happened in Boston lately. Which is no excuse, I know, but it does factor in I think. The bombings also lead to a couple of games being delayed and pushed to the end of the schedule, when they already had a busy one - they consistently had like 3-4 games in hand for most of the season, their schedule already being more rear-loaded than front-loaded - so they've been run ragged. Add to that the fact that the Leafs are hungry and playing hard, and have a goalie standing on his head, and this is where we're at right now. They could still pull it out with a win tonight but honestly, even if they do, I can't see them having the energy to put up much of a fight against whoever wins the Capitals/Rangers series. Though since that other series is going 7 games then they'll be tired too, so who knows? It's hard to watch though so one way or another it'll be nice to have this Game 7 behind me after tonight. I had my fill of Game 7s back in the 2011 playoffs. XD

I've been working on The Great Gatsby now, on my wife's recommendation and in anticipation of watching the movie. I'm a little over halfway through it - I'm such a slow reader, as it's not a huge book by any means XD - and I'm liking it. I'm curious as to how they're going to film it, as it doesn't seem like it'll translate into a very lengthy movie, but we'll see.

My next goal is to finish the second Game of Thrones novel, as the second season is long over and available to purchase already for Pete's sake, and hasn't season three started too or something? I'm very out of touch, haha. XD I also have several other books I see on the shelf waiting for me and I'm tempted to just dive into them as well, but no, I already have 49273472398 books started and in progress, I can't justify starting (or buying ffs *needs to stop going to Chapters/Coles*) any more right now.

Oh, I did finish The Sisters Brothers recently and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very neat little story and I want to look into more books by the same author, but see the above, hehe.

We saw Iron Man 3 last weekend and I won't spoil it but meh. I wasn't too thrilled with it overall. I did like it, yes, but maybe it's just lofty expectations I have from The Avengers setting the bar too high or something but it just didn't do it for me. I wasn't too keen on the plot either, again with no spoilers, so I dunno. Maybe I just need to watch it again I suppose, I'm sure I will, and I'll certainly get it when it comes out on video, so we'll see if my opinion changes.

As mentioned above I'm also looking forward to seeing The Great Gatsby, which looks like it'll be fun, and... there's other movies too but they're escaping me at the moment. Oh, Star Trek, yes, definitely that please haha. And the new Superman, I'll be giving that a whirl, perhaps with my cousin who's a huge Superman fan.

I re-watched the Star Trek reboot on Saturday morning when I got up early, then finally watched Stargate for the first time, haha. XD A friend of mine in the city has been bugging me to watch it, and he doesn't really watch all that much stuff in that vein (he was a big BSG reboot fan though), and after attending a panel on SG-1 at Sci Fi On The Rock my wife discovered I'd never seen the movie or the show so she'd encouraged me to do so, so I did. I liked it, and am now curious to see the show, which I thiiiink is on Netflix so I may just do that. There's so much to see though, and so little time, so we'll see, but at least now I can say I've seen the movie. And the Star Trek had me anxious for the new one, can't wait to see that now. :D

A bunch of us have been playing the new D&D MMO, Neverwinter, which is... live, sort of? It's free to play and they claim it's in Open Beta, even though there'll be no character wipes from here on out and you can spend money in game, etc., which really means it's live but whatever. XD I'm glad it's up at any rate and have been playing it here and there, with my character only at level 9 but it's still fun. I may roll a second one but for now I just want to play my Rogue, and they'll be releasing new classes in awhile so I may wait and see what that'll be before using up my second spot. You get two for free and have to pay for more, of course. I haven't really played with anyone else much, aside from a few hours on Friday, and I'm so low it's probably for the best that I just work on getting leveled up, at least for now.

I've always been that way, which is weird. The game is an MMO and it helps to play with others, but I end up either soloing like crazy at first and outpacing everyone, or lagging so far behind and then just playing solo to catch up, I dunno. Playing solo in MMOs seems contrary to the whole point but it's what ends up happening with me. That's why I liked GW2 so much, I think, because regardless of your level you still got appropriate XP when going backwards. Like, a level 40 character could come play with me and my level 10 character in a level 10-ish zone and the level 40 toon would get level 40 amounts of XP, even though they were scaled back to level 10 so as not to be unbalanced in the zone, so it encouraged people to help others and made all the content level appropriate all the time. I love that mechanic, and wish more games would use it.

Anyway, back to Neverwinter, I do like it but it's different. Much more click-y and action-y than other MMOs I've played, but then again I'm only at level 9 so I can't speak as to how that applies as you get higher in level. It's fun though and free, so I'll keep at it when I can. :)

Not much else to add in general, I suppose. May 24th weekend is coming up, and with the 24th falling on a Friday we get the preceding Monday, the 20th, off instead. Friends of ours have a place in Summerville that's about a 3.5 hours or so drive away so we may go out there, but they're having people over on Saturday and since Sara works Monday morning we'll have to come back on Sunday at some point. I think it'll still be worth it, though, good friends and good fun, and some fresh air, plus it'll only set us back the cost of the gas which, while not insignificant these days, isn't that bad for a weekend getaway.

We have a wedding to attend in July, which should be nice, and there's bachelor/bachelorette parties for us to attend before that too, so that's the next big thing for us this year I guess. I have no other plans for the summer, really; there's a 10 year Law School reunion in August but I don't know if I'll be going. It's looking like no at the moment, unless I come into some money in the near future, but even then I could use it for better purposes so I dunno.

Trying to end on a high note, or at least a positive one, hmm... oh, I've been walking more lately, and have been enjoying Zombies Run! while doing so once again. I had season one way back when, as a pre-order, even, and now season two is out but I've yet to finish the first. I'm close to finishing it though and need to get back out there, note to self go for a walk after work! I didn't all weekend, choosing instead to watch a bunch of movies and to read, which was nice and relaxing, but I need to get back at it tonight. And so I will. :)
