canadiandiamond: ([BSG] and now that you're here...?)
So, it's been awhile since I actually posted in here. I've been in the US since Thursday, May 14th, which is almost 2 weeks ago now, yikes. I'm here until Saturday, so I still have another 4 days here, which isn't as long as I'd like but it'll have to do. This is still my longest trip ever to the US and the longest time Sara and I have spent together, which is a good thing, but still.

I flew into Philly on Thursday the 14th, and hung out here until that Saturday. I got a rental car that Friday (a brand new Kia Spectra with only 24 miles on it when we got it, which we have until I leave, and which was 1,400+ miles on it now XD) and on Saturday after Sara finished work, we packed up and headed out for Buffalo. We found a hotel in Owego that night (Binghamton was all booked up thanks to university graduation going on) and on Sunday we reached our first destination, Allegany State Park, where we stayed for two nights in a cabin. No running water, no electricity, and despite my best efforts no fire. XD Well, I did get one started and it ran while we tried to sleep, but wouldn't stay lit for long. That first night we froze our butts off, omfg, and the next day we left the park and hit up Wal-Mart in Springville and got sleeping bags. The second night was much, much, MUCH warmer thanks to those, and we had a good time overall there. Very pretty, I have pictures to upload later on.

On Tuesday we got up early and left the park, then drove the rest of the way to North Tonawanda and met up with Sara's family and my family. Wednesday was the big day, omg, and we had a small wedding ceremony in the North Tonawanda Botanical Gardens, which we also have pictures of and will post eventually. It was a nice little ceremony, with just our families present (and Sara's friend who was getting married on Friday who had a camcorder and recorded it for us), and it was so nice and warm out, it was great.

I'll pause here to explain that a little bit more, which Sara may or may not want to add on or expand upon later in her own journal. Originally, after getting engaged, our plan was to have a traditional, big-ish wedding back in Newfoundland next fall, Sept. / Oct. 2010 or thereabouts. However, upon looking into the Canadian Immigration laws and what they state, we wouldn't be able to apply for Sara's permanent residency or the like until we're both either common law (i.e. having lived together for at least a year) or married. So in short, we could have the big wedding in 2010 but then we'd have to apply for her citizenship and have to wait 5-6 months after that, i.e. into 2011, before she could stay in Canada. Which would not be what either of us want. That's when the idea of having our own little ceremony to get married and then apply for her citizenship came up, and since I was coming here for Amanda (her friend)'s wedding anyway, that's how it all happened. It doesn't change things re: when she's going to move here; it's still going to take at least 5-6 months for the paperwork to go through, maybe longer, so no green light until early 2010 anyway. And even then, we both have things we need to look after, both personally and together, like finding a new home, and our respective work situations, etc. There's a lot to it, we've both discussed it at great length and will continue to do so because obviously this is something that's important to us both and if we could be living together right now then we would be. The reality of the situation, however, means that's not the case. Getting married like we did is a way to try and speed things up on that front, though it will still take awhile yet.

And the reason why we didn't advertise this as much or tell many people was mainly because we were keeping it a very small, family-only thing. We didn't want to tell people and invite a few close friends / geographically close people and have others ask why they weren't invited, or think that we were snubbing them, etc. We will be having a bigger ceremony down the road where we'll renew our vows and all that good stuff, and that will be a big planned event, people will be invited, things will be discussed way in advance, etc., so don't worry. :) Right now though we just had to do this in order to get our marriage certificate so we can start the long, drawn-out process of getting approval for my wife to move to Canada.

Right, so! Moving on! Thursday was a day to relax and we spent it together, hitting the mall in the area and getting ready for Amanda's rehearsal dinner that night, which was very fun. On Friday it was another quick trip to the mall, the bigger one, and then on to Amanda's wedding, which we went to and then the reception afterward. The party was nice, though it ended fairly early, and then we headed back to the hotel. On Saturday we hit the Guitar Centre with Erin and Nick, then had a nice lunch with my new father-in-law, followed by seeing the in-laws one more time and then driving back to Pennsylvania. We stayed in a hotel in Binghamton on the way back down, which was nice, and then got back here on Sunday afternoon.

Since then, Sara's been working and I've been hanging out with T / driving around Pennsylvania and Delaware (I'm so easily amused by that fact; look at me, I'm driving all over America! :D!) and spending money that I probably shouldn't be spending, including a kick-ass new PC for myself. I'm hoping to borrow T's monitor and to give it a shot tonight, which should be fun. Sara doesn't have to work tomorrow so this is a good chance for us to hang out and enjoy the last bit of extended free time together we'll have for awhile. We'll still have Thursday and Friday, though, and Saturday until I leave (which is after supper).

There's more specifics to it than that, but that's all I can type out for now. I've got to check in on my sleeping wife and make sure she's ok, then grab some supper and work on mah new desktop. We're planning to LOTRO it up a little tonight if we can, it should be fun. Tomorrow is a full day off and we plan to watch some movies (Sara needs to see The Godfather and True Romance at least!) and maybe play some more too, we'll see. But yes, off I go.

I hope everyone's doing well, I've tried to keep up on LJ during the trip though my 'net access has been sporadic at best. Take care, and I will be updating semi-regularly as usual again soon enough. :)

canadiandiamond: (Unstoppable)
I haven't written anything here in ages, oops. Things have been pretty busy with work and in my spare time I've been watching play-off hockey / video games instead of writing on here. That and playing around with Facebook, which everyone seems to be on all of a sudden lately, so weird but cool at the same time.

I blew a lot of money this weekend, mainly on Friday night by buying myself an early gift, namely a Wii hehe. They've been hard to find so I pounced on the one I did spy in Wal-Mart, and Friday night was mainly filled with hooking that up and playing with it. Good times! I got the 420p cables with it too so it looks pretty good. Not as good as the 360 of course, but it's like comparing apples and oranges in my books, really. One's all about power and performance and the other's all about fun and interactivity, kinda. Anyway!

On Saturday I got up and headed to the city, intent on just hanging out with a friend and getting my sister who was coming out for a few nights. However she intended on staying in and by the time I figured that out it was just as well for me to stay in, even though I didn't pack any extra clothes or things like that. The afternoon was great though, we saw Hot Fuzz which was amaaaaaaaazing. Seriously, you all should see this movie, especially if you liked Shaun of the Dead at all. Then we met up with my sister and went out for supper, then shopped for a bit, where my sister got me season one of Weeds and a game controller for my birthday gift. Which I won't get until tomorrow, but it's all good. I dropped her off at her place then so she could work on her thesis and my friend and I got another quick bite to eat (this was several hours after supper) and hung out until after 1am.

As I was leaving there, my sister called to tell me that her boyfriend, who went downtown drinking, had come home and was very, very sick, heh. She wanted me to call her before I came back to her place since it was a mess and she wanted to clean it up before I got back. I was on my way back anyway and asked if she needed anything to do that, so then I went to the 24 hour Sobey's, which is a big grocery store chain here, and picked up some laundry detergent so she could wash his clothes, and picked up some stuff for myself. It was weird because while the place was open, they had a sign saying the registers close every Saturday night (technically Sunday morning) from 1-1:30am for maintenance, but they didn't open until closer to 2am. There were a nice few people there too, all grumbling about how long it was taking, hehe. I didn't mind because I wasn't in a hurry to get back to that mess. XD

By the time I got back everything was neat and the drunken one had gone to bed, so it was all good. I ended up talking to [livejournal.com profile] everyoung for a long time and then going to sleep after watching some poker on tv. Then today I dropped off a birthday card and a dozen beer to my friend whose birthday is today, hehe, and chatted with him and his wife for like 2 hours while Jen and her boyfriend got ready to come out with me. I also popped into the mall again and bought a Wii game, just a cheap one (Rampage, which may not be the best but I enjoy random monsters beating up buildings, sue me) and rented a couple as well at Blockbuster for good measure. Since I've been home I've been playing around with that and just generally being lazy. Good times!

I have to work tomorrow, even though it's a provincial government holiday for some places for St. George's Day. We got St. Paddy's day off but not this one, which sucks. We had both at my old place and apparently we had this one off last year when I wasn't here but the boss isn't giving it to us this year, boo. Ah well, what are you gonna do.

Right now I'm off to watch the rest of Detroit / Calgary on CBC and get some sleep, maybe with some Wii-age in between the 2nd and 3rd period. :D

This weekend seemed to go by way too fast for my liking. I know I did a lot of running around and actually had a lot of fun but it seemed way too short.

Friday after work I headed into the city with mom, so she could keep my sister company while I ran around doing things. One of the girls at work gave me tickets to the Fog Devils game in there, but the weather turned so awful as we drove in (it was snowing when we left but not much) that it took over twice as long to get into the city, over two hours as opposed to just one. It was very messy on the roads in there too, and the game was past half over, so I never bothered going after all. Mark and I did go to see Smoking Aces which was kinda crappy and hung out in general.

Saturday morning I got up much earlier than I do when I'm home (11am, shh) and once again met up with Mark. He's going to Alberta in a few weeks so this was maybe the last weekend I'd see him, unless I go in St. John's again this weekend coming. We went out to Future Shop, Staples and Cost Co, had a late lunch at Swiss Chalet and then popped into Blockbuster so he could rent a game. It turned out that was where my spending began, I was really good (ie just buying meals) up to that point. I got this 4/$20 package which included A History of Violence, Jarhead, The Island and Lord of War. I've only seen The Island before but they all seem like decent movies, plus people I know who saw them said they were good for the most part.

Then I headed to the mall by myself to do a little shopping for Valentine's Day. I can't get into exactly what I got of course, heh, but I did get a few things for myself. I picked up Oh, Inverted World and Wincing the Night Away by The Shins and a new Kathy Reichs book, since the last one was ok. That's not too, too bad, really. I hope! We came back out last night and I just lazed around, watching hockey and chatting online.

Today has been nice too, with a family dinner at Nan's and then spending the afternoon hanging out, watching hockey. What Superbowl? I did turn the game on later in the evening, though I had no interest in it at all. It was just on for the sake of having the tv on, and I had it on mute while listening to my Shins cds. :D I also randomly thought that [livejournal.com profile] wakeupem would be proud of me if she heard about the cds and movies I got this weekend. XD

Also, as a sidenote I also purchased this MMORPG online, which means I only download the huuuuuuuuge game (~7.5GB of a download I think before I even unpack it, wtf) so I can play it, only because my buddy Brad in SK got it and didn't tell me. If I'd have known I could've bought the box and all in the city, but our tiny Wal-Mart didn't have it here. The game looks ok but mainly I miss talking to him and hanging out online, killing stuff and leveling up, whatever. He's on MSN too but hardly ever replies and is one of those people that's always set to Away which drives me nuts, grrr. ANYWAY. It should be downloaded by the time I wake up and I can mess around with it tomorrow.

And speaking of tomorrow, I should get to sleep since I have court in the morning. Nothing huge but I have to be there, so. It's snowing out quite heavily but I doubt that I'll be lucky enough to have a third straight week with a snow day in it, at least not tomorrow anyway. :)

The weekend wasn't too bad. I mostly took it easy, staying home Friday night to watch a few movies and chat a little. On Saturday I got up and drove the new vehicle into St. John's for the first time, taking my sister with me to go in and see Alpha Dog. It was pretty good, I must say. We also hung out at the mall a little, I got her birthday present for her and everything. I also picked up some used movies at Blockbuster during their 3/$20 sale (Capote, Munich and Broken Flowers) and later that night when we came home and went to Wal-Mart for her to return stuff I bought season one of This Is Wonderland, a Canadian legal show that's really dead on with respect to how the judicial system works here in Canada, and funny too!

Today I didn't do anything at all besides sleep in and watch tv. After supper I went to watch the premiere of Season 6 of 24 just to hang out with my cousin, even though I've never seen the show before. He loaned me Season One of it to check out, which I will in due course. He also reads a lot and was telling me about how he's getting back into the habit of reading more, which makes me want to do the same. I buy books left, right and center because they look good but keep putting them on the shelf to buy newer ones. I really am horrible like that, with DVDs and CDs too, it's a bad, bad habit. So I'm going to try and read more, I've already started a couple of books in the last few weeks, so I'm going to resolve myself to finish both of those before starting / buying any more. I shouldn't buy any more for ages really, heh.

Anyway, that being said, off to bed for me. I should try and read a few more chapters before falling asleep. Tomorrow's going to be a busy Monday so I shouldn't stay up too, too late.

Without going into details and spoiling things for people, Heroes and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip are both awesome shows. I love how they come on back to back, and I hope that's not just a quirk of the premiere episode of the former. It's much easier to watch them when they're lined up like this.

Work today was ok, it only took me thirty minutes or so to deal with the matter in court, and most of that was sitting around waiting for the matter to be called. Then I had breakfast with my friend Mark after meeting him at his office (no prostitutes around this time, thankfully) and came back home. By the time I got back it was lunch time, so it was basically a half day in the office. Sweet!

Alright, time for bed. Here's hoping tomorrow feels like a half day too, even though it'll be a full one. Does anything good come out on CD / DVD tomorrow? Not that I need to waste any more $. >.>

Sweet!

trip summary!

Ok, so I'm going to divide this up into cuts since it's so long.

Part One: Canada! )

Part Two: Entering the US! )

Part Three: New Hampshire! )

Part Four: The Journey Home! )

So that's that. Ugh, it's after 1am and I swore I'd get to bed early tonight. Funny thing is I was in bed relatively early during the trip, to make it easier to get up and drive, and now I'm up later on work nights? Bah. Anyway, off to bed I go. Here's hoping there's not too much piled up and waiting for me!

Oh yes, one more thing, I saw Winter Passing tonight, which I bought at Borders sight unseen (and unheard of too) because it has Zooey Deschanel and Will Ferrell in it. I really liked it and made this icon from it. :D

So, I'm in the lounge of the Bes Western hotel in Portsmouth, NH. Not a bad spot! Got to go swimming and lounging in the whirlpool earlier this afternoon, which was nice. Going to tour around a little now, get some supper and maybe catch a movie I think. Tomorrow we may or may not go to Kittery, ME, where all these outlet stores are. My friend was talking about this for, like, weeks, but now that he found out it's in ME and not NH (ie there's sales tax, albeit low compared to our Canadian standards) he doesn't really want to go. Anyway, we'll see about that tomorrow I guess. Either way we'll need to head back through ME and towards good ol' Canada again, in anticipation of a Saturday ferry crossing.

I'd check my games and stuff but there's a 10 minute limit and I've already been here almost 30 catching up on y'all's postings on LJ, oops. No one's waiting anyway, I don't think. *nervous glance around* Anyway, be back soon! ♥

Well, tonight I meant to go to bed early, but here I am again. Not too, too bad though. And tomorrow's Thursday, one day away from Friday. :D The only thing is that the other 2 lawyers at the office will be away until Monday (one gone to a conference, one in court both days then going to the same conference), so if anything comes up, it's all on me. >.>; Annnnnnnd I have a trial on Monday, where I learned yesterday that none of our witnesses will be there. Not even the defendant. Nice to have a heads up in tons of time. -.-;; I wrote the court and the other side today to let them know, and at the end of the day the e-mail I got back from the other side said, of course, that they aren't willing to agree to a postponement and want to go ahead with it as scheduled. We postponed it last time back in May because just one of their witnesses wasn't available, and now when our entire list isn't around they won't consent. Grrrr. We still can argue that it should be postponed again, it'd just be easier if we agreed. As it is, I have to be prepared just in case I have to do it all on my frickin' own, oy. Not like I can give evidence, but I'll have to do cross and make submissions, etc. I hate this job sometimes.

Anyway, other than that, today was good. Work in general is ok, I suppose. Oh, and I also spent money in advance once again. I paid off so much on one of my cards since I've been using it on eBay a lot, then I went and bought something else on eBay that almost equals what I paid back. -.-;; By which I mean this. It makes me happy, shhh. And there were more expensive ones in the past that I could've gotten and didn't. AND this one has not one but two names on it, so there. Yay for flawed reasoning!

Well, off to bed it is. At least my favourite team is on tomorrow night, and there's a Friday night game, plus Hockey Night in Canada = tons of hockey coming up (there was one on tonight too!). It'll be a nice relaxing weekend, I hope. I just wish it'd hurry up and get here.

The wedding was pretty fun, I had more fun than I thought I would. See, most of the people I knew at the whole thing were at the head table / in the bridal party, so I didn't think they'd have much time to hang out with me or anything. That wasn't the case luckily, so I was there pretty much until the thing was over. Good times!

The rest of the weekend was ok... I picked up Monty Python's The Meaning of Life on DVD, as it seems I can't visit St. John's without buying something. Oh, and I also saw The Island at the theatre on Friday night. Not too bad, better than I had expected. Wanted to see Wedding Crashers, but my sister's boyfriend adamantly refused to see it. Apparently he hates Owen Wilson or something. Oh well, it's playing out here this weekend, so I'll see it then I expect.

I made 3 more icons tonight for that [livejournal.com profile] abc_icons challenge, bringing my total to 16/26. Slowly but surely getting there! I have another screencap saved with an idea in mind, so that's a head start for tomorrow. It's fun, especially playing with some of the tutorials I've found. Photoshop is endless fun, people.

Anyway, I should head for bed now and get ready for the week. The boss and the office manager are both off on vacation this week, so the office will be a bit more relaxed I think. For me anyway, I always feel a bit more pressure when they're around, at times anyway. So no worries about that this week! And I have court on Tuesday, that should be fun too. Hope everyone had a good weekend! :)

And oh boy, it couldn't come soon enough. Thankfully it's a long weekend too, and it'll be the first one where I'll be staying put in over a month. This is not only good for the car, as I've put a ton of kilometers on it, but for the wallet too, I've spent way too much money in the last several weeks. I should have more than enough shows / movies / cds / books to keep me busy for a nice, long time, I just need to remember that whenever something new comes out and I want to buy it.

Today was crazy at work. The morning wasn't too bad, just had to sit in on a client giving a statement to an insurance adjuster and other stuff, but when I was home for lunch I got a call to come back in early. It's not cool when a client calls you at 1:30 (while you're at lunch), asking for something to be done by 3, when the day before it was called off and as far as you knew it was still off. Grrrrr. I usually go back to work at 2, and I had an appointment at 3 in a community about a 45 min. drive away, and I was late for it because of this crap. But oh well, no one minded, and I even got the chance to take a few pictures while I was there, of the bay. The town's name is Jacques Fontaine, heh. Here's the two pics I took:

A few pictures. )

Anyway, other than that, work was ok. Tomorrow should be ok as well, I hope. I only have one appointment at the moment, but that can change. It's only to get something signed, so that shouldn't be too bad. And after that, long weekend! Now if only Episode III was playing out here, I'd be happy. Then again it'd be super packed as there's only one teeny, tiny theatre here, and nowhere near as good a screen as in the city, so maybe it's better that I have to wait. Either way, I'm sure it'll be in theatres for a good, long while, so no worries.

Finally, this song? Has been like a panacea for me lately it seems, the last few weeks anyway. It does a very good job of cheering you up, for me it has at least. Much ♥ for this tune. *goes off to bed*
